As we move into the Winter season here are some safety checks for around the home.
Check your hot water system: Regularly test the pressure and temperature relief valves of your hot water system to enhance efficiency, extend its lifespan, and prevent failures.
Maintain ventilation in damp areas: Adequate winter ventilation is crucial in damp areas like bathrooms and laundry. Tenants should use exhaust fans or open windows to ensure proper airflow and prevent mould when using the dryer.
Inspect heating systems: Before using heating systems like air conditioners, fireplaces, or heaters in winter, ensure they are inspected and cleaned, including filters and chimneys.
Comply with smoke alarm legislation: Now is an ideal time to test and clean smoke alarms and replace flat batteries. Notify your property manager/owner immediately if a smoke alarm is malfunctioning for reasons other than battery failure.
Maintain your lawn and garden: Even though grass grows slowly in winter, garden maintenance remains crucial. Lawn care arrangements should be included in your tenancy agreement.
Your obligations as a tenant: The property manager/owner must ensure the property is habitable, well-maintained, and meets housing standards. Tenants are responsible for keeping it clean, adhering to rental agreement terms, and promptly reporting maintenance or repair needs.
